Sukarno was one of the great charismatic leaders of the post-war-world. To some he was the architect of his nation, to others a flamboyant and extravagant dictator. This classic work, first published in 1972 and now revised by the author, attempts to reconcile these ccontrasting images. The book charts his rise to leadership of the Indonesian Nationalist Movement, his activities during the Japanese occupation and the struggle for independence which followed the Second World War, and his record as first President of the Republic.

This biography recognises both Sukarno's cirtues and his weaknesses and examines the character of his leadership, considering the extent to which he was a product of the Javanese tradition and assessing his claims as a genuine revolutionary. Some surprising conclusions are reached and Sukarno emerges in this book as a complex figure - appearing supremely self-assured and resourceful to some, to others he seemed a hesitant and vulnerable figure.

Professor J.D. Legge is the author of a series of works on Indonesia, in particular Central Authority and Regional Autonomy in Indonesia, a study of the Republic's attempt to cope with the centrifugal forces making for disunity and Indonesia, a survey of the course of Indonesian history.
